Old Pinawa and surroundings

Yesterday we drove to Pinawa: visited the Old Pinawa Dam, the “new” Pinawa, the power generation plant at Seven Sisters Falls and, finally, Lac du Bonnet.

Last night we arrived home quite late and I was too tired to upload the pictures and write about the trip. This morning I got up early and started to play with the Media Library and Gallery features of the WordPress. I could not customize it to the extent I wanted… so I came up with quite a long list of things that I would like to be changed in the galleries management. I will probably write another post about it in the next days.

Back to our trip: the Old Pinawa Dam site is a provincial park today (if you click the link don’t forget to come back and finish reading the post!). There was the very first hydro-electric generating station of Manitoba. The Dam also has a very interesting web site where you can read more details about the construction — with archive photos — and the whole history of Pinawa. Both the old and new Pinawa are situated N-E from Winnipeg, which means you start driving on the Prarires region while the end point of the trip is already on the Canadian Shield. The Canadian shield is the oldest rock formation of the continent and it covers millions of square kilometers. (Here is a map to have a rough idea about the Shield.)

The weather was beautiful and I took more than 100 pictures. Some of them you can see below. From the old dam we went to see the “new” power generating plant at Seven Sisters Falls (which was built in 1949), and also entered the new Pinawa - it looks more like a resort than a town. Except the Winnipeg River, which looks there like a lake, I couldn’t find anything worth a photo. Then we drove up north to Lac du Bonnet. Again, only the lake is the only thing worth seeing.
