I posted earlier about this sponsored WordPress themes issue, and to be honest I was hoping after the big discussions that something would be done about it. Well, it didn’t happen. On the theme repository site at http://themes.wordpress.net the number of “free” themes went well over 3,000. The only problem is: lately almost all of them are sponsored themes with links in the footer to shitty websites.

The newest low came to light yesterday when a user looked into his code and discovered some totally obfuscated code. Just putting the crappy code there for me is already a criminal act toward the users who go to that site because they trust it (and we are telling them in the forum!). The user posted to the WP forum and then whooami, one of the regular helpers and code guru, decoded the crap: it was obfuscated garbage links and tracker code. Even Matt Mullenweg, the WordPress lead developer made one of his rare appearences in the forum and stated that something needs to be done. Because it is “disgusting”. Actually, I fully agree with him on this one. I am just curious when that something is going to happen…
