We have been visiting Québec - which in local lingo means Québec City, the provincial capital. If you think Montréal is a different country, you didn’t see Québec. Now I realize in Montréal you can find quite a number bilingual signs, most people who work in services can speak English, too… but In Québec - nothing. I couldn’t find one English sign or English text in the old city. Everything is only in French. Even America is French: see the picture. QC-MAF

Otherwise it was nice. The old city has its charme, or maybe we liked it because it reminds us of the old European cities: little narrow streets, old buildings, and the streets going up and down on the hill - a big joy after the plainness of the Prairies. From the top of the hill we spotted a little restaurant with bright yellow umbrellas, and we decided to have a rest there when going down. On our way we had fun with a “street picture” painted on a huge firewall and, finally, got a beer under the umbrellas. There wasn’t a real need for them because it was not too hot but windy and cool. Although they are prepared for that, too, offering blankets for the patrons.
