We went out from our Park Avenue place for a walk and discovered a lovely neighbourhood: walking down on Prince Arthur Street we arrived to a pedestrians only area that has many restaurants tempting you with a wide variety of international cuisine: Greek, Indian, Polish, Vietnamese, Italian, Libanese… and everything else in between.

Street in the neighbourhood
I have discovered some interesting arhitectural solutions - but I have to go back later to take some more pictures.
The restaurants on the “walking street” where no cars are allowed all had huge patios, lots of tables in the warm afternoon, so we entered one of those places. After the long walk I thought I’d deserve a beer. Sorry, we don’t sell alcoholic beverages, said the waiter. When I looked around and saw all kind of beers and wines on the tables, he added: you have to bring your wine or beer… Well, I have heard all around the world the opposite - usually, they won’t let you to bring your own wine, beer, alcohol in a restuarant. Of course, I didn’t stay, although the waiter tried to convince me that the “marche” (market) is only across the street in the second building, where I could buy what I wanted drink. Actually, what I wanted was to sit and have somebody bringing me a beer. Big difference! Anyway, I have discovered later all the signs at the entrances saying: Apportez votre vin…
Finally, I ate in a place where they didn’t have English menu, the waiter’s English was almost like my French - but they all were very friendly, trying to accomodate every weird request of ours. But there is no need for the basics: the waiter looked at the almost empty glass, then at me, I nodded, and he brought the next one. It’s called L’évidence, on rue St. Denis.

BYO = “Bring Your Own” is what they call this system (Apportez votre whatever)in Australia. I was just as surprised as you.
Refilling your beer glass without asking for it is a good tradition in Köln/Cologne - if you drink the local beer, called surprisingly…”Kölsch”
Kölsch ist ein sehr gut bier… if my never-existed German is correct :)
