We are going to live a month in Montréal. This is the first morning in our rented apartment as we arrived late last night. We opted for a place at LaCité, a cozy little studio. Everything seems to be fine except the internet: Sunday morning at 11:24 (Eastern) the connection still doesn’t work. I have already tried all the known tricks, checked all the cables, connections, turned the modem and the computer on and off million times – still nothing.
This is a big disappointment because one of the reasons why we went with LaCité was their advertisement saying high speed internet connection is included in every apartment.
Update. After writing the text above I contacted the administration and they told me to call the IPS (VDN). I did and after getting my data they promised a technician would call me back soon. I was a bit skeptical about it, however in a minute they called back and after I gave him the MAC number from the back of the modem, he reset it and surprisingly even for him, the connection became alive in a minute. So, actually, around 11:40 the internet started working properly. I was impressed by the quality of this customer service! Great start for our stay in Montreal.
As for the start, I was also pleasantly surprised by the bottle of red wine (bottled specially for LaCité) which was waiting us last night on the coffee table. In this regard, it is a different world: unlike in the coomon law, Anglo-Saxon provinces having a glass of wine is not considered some “moral disability” that you have to hide. And based on the first day’s impressions, one cannot see more drunk people on the streets than, let’s say, in downtown Winnipeg. We had quite a long walk in the sunny early afternoon hours together with hundreds (thousands?) of Montréalers… there was a huge crowd on the streets enjoying the beautiful weather.
On rue Sainte Catherines there was a little episode that could be a perfect illustration for the benign globalization. In the middle of Catholic Québec in front of an impressive neo-Gothic cathedral that is today a United Church establishment there was a young Chinese guy playing on violin the music of a 19th European composer… As so many others, we stopped for a few minutes, listened to the music in the sunshine and felt good.
P.S. My bald head got burnt by the sun and now it’s itchy.
